Energy Express creates a safe learning environment for children to maintain and/or gain reading skills over the summer months through a period of 6 weeks. Learning through art, drama, writing and other various ways allows children to learn in a less structured environment while also meeting WV Content Standards and Objectives. During the program day children are served 2 nutritious meals and identified children will take meals home. Energy Express also engages college students through AmeriCorps service, promotes community participation, and raises awareness. Parents and other caretakers are encouraged to join the children throughout this summer learning experience. By performing all of the above, the program provides a safe place first to at-risk children during the summer addressing both educational loss and summer food disparity.
