Halo House Foundation

Halo House Foundation supports blood cancer patients and their caregivers by providing affordable and fully furnished temporary apartment housing to enable access to lifesaving treatment in the Texas Medical Center.

With 33 fully furnished apartments, community center, non-denominational chapel, peaceful gardens, covered patio and fitness center, Halo House supports each patients journey from illness toward healing. Halo House is a place of tranquil respite for patients, families, and caregivers who together have daily health care appointments, hospital and doctor visits and treatment protocols.

Residents arrive at Halo House from locations throughout Texas and the US, as well as from countries around the world. These patients travel to Houston because their treatments are unavailable where they live, a previous treatment has failed or the treatment available in the Texas Medical Center (TMC) is their best and final option to live. Many treatment protocols require patients be within 15 minutes of hospital care thus patients need housing near the TMC for access to ongoing treatment. In addition to their health challenges, residents face challenges of relocating, navigating a new city and hospital system, being separated from family and friends back home and managing living expenses both in Houston and where they live.

Most patient families and caregivers reside at Halo House for eight weeks and up to four months. Without Halo House these patients could not afford to live in Houston for treatment or would risk financial insolvency from the cost of long stays in hotels while also paying a mortgage or rent. Residents pay $25 a day for a one-bedroom apartment and $35 for a two-bedroom apartment. For blood cancer patients, private apartment living is particularly important because their immune systems are especially vulnerable to infectious viruses and disease. Apartments include kitchen essentials and cooking utensils, towels and linens, a full-size washer and dryer and internet. Halo House also stocks a lending closet with common supplies and surplus items for residents to borrow rather than purchase. To further minimize expenses, primarily parking in the TMC, Halo House offers a free shuttle service to TMC hospitals every weekday from 6am to 6pm.
