About

We serve the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We are looking for people interested in helping the mental health community. Free training is provided. Opportunities: 1. Outreach & Marketing - a. Conduct outreach and identify new potential partners (organizations, agencies, businesses) for collaboration, maintaining contact and effective communication with both existing and new community partners. b. Offer NAMI programs to HR departments of businesses as a means of providing mental health support and resources for their employees. c. Deliver (in-person or via mail) relevant information packets to community partners & providers. d. Create & maintain effective communication/marketing outreach plan to publicize our programs and other updates (e.g. e-mail schedule, contact lists, social media posting calendar). e. Act as NAMI representative in the lobby of psychiatric and other hospitals, giving people our literature and answering questions.

2. Social Media -

a. Engage with community on social media (share posts, comment, monitor messages). b. Add to collaborative brainstorming board with campaign ideas & proposed posting calendar. c. Work closely with Social Media Manager.

3. Advocacy -

a. Coordinate or assist with at least one advocacy campaign (in partnership with Board committee/s) and advocacy chairperson. b. Maintain and update state and federal legislator list for Coastal Virginia area.

4. Fundraising -

a. Assist NAMI Walks chairperson in organization of the annual event. b. Organize a fundraiser at a local restaurant or other venue. c. Assist with end-of-the-year or other fundraising efforts by mail/email.

5. Membership -

a. Coordinate and mail letters to lapsed members.

6. Office -

a. Assist with tasks as needed.

7. Classes and Support Groups (free training required, most require participation in the program prior to training) -

Facilitators and teachers needed for: Family support groups, Family-to-Family classes, Connection recovery support groups, Peer to Peer classes, In Our Own Voice Presenters, Homefront classes (targeted to active duty/veterans & their families).

8. Youth Programs and Initiatives -

a. Outreach to existing and new community partners - build & maintain collaborative relationships. b. Cultivate youth-related resources to add to our resource list (including but not limited to: crisis text/hotlines, forum websites, support/activity groups, social media accounts, etc.). c. Identifying and developing opportunities for Ending the Silence and Say it Out Loud program presentations (attend at least one of each). d. Assist the Youth Committee in researching/developing unique programs/opportunities that are relevant and beneficial for area youth. e. Assist in managing a monthly email to interest list which includes our programs and those offered by our community partners.

NAMI Coastal Virginia is a non-profit, grass-roots organization and the voice for those affected by mental health conditions. We advocate at the local, state, and national levels to eradicate stigma, and are committed to improving the lives of the those with a mental health condition and their families by providing free support groups, free classes, educational programs, and community outreach. ​
