Brief Organizational Description:
The City of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities preserves and maintains historic cemeteries as sacred spaces of remembrance, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship. Through community engagement, we work to protect and restore these important landscapes for future generations.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Join us for a private volunteer workday at Evergreen and East End Cemeteries in partnership with Union Congregational Church. Volunteers will support ongoing preservation efforts by assisting with vegetation management and general site cleanup. This work is essential to maintaining access, honoring those interred, and advancing restoration efforts at these historic African American burial grounds.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will assist with:
- Removing invasive vegetation (ivy, brush, and overgrowth) in designated areas
- Clearing limbs, debris, and litter throughout targeted sections
- Collecting and staging organic debris for disposal
- Supporting general beautification and preservation efforts
All work will take place in assigned areas under staff and partner guidance to ensure safety and impact.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
- No prior experience required
- Must be able to perform light to moderate physical activity (bending, lifting, walking on uneven terrain)
- Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (18+)
- All volunteers must follow on-site safety instructions provided at the start of the event

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Volunteers are expected to stay for the duration of the shift unless otherwise arranged in advance.
Other Information (if applicable):
- Volunteer Hours Verification: Attendance will be tracked through CFEngage. Verified hours will be available following the event.
- Orientation: A brief safety and task overview will be provided at the start of the workday.
- Recommended Attire: Closed-toe shoes, long pants, and comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor work.
- What to Bring: Water, work gloves (if you have them), and insect repellent. Limited tools and gloves will be available on-site.
- Parking: Parking details will be shared with registered volunteers prior to the event.
- Special Instructions: Volunteers will meet at a designated check-in location and may be directed to specific work zones within Evergreen and East End Cemeteries.
