About this Opportunity

The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum seeks volunteers to help maintain its historic rose garden, cactus, garden, children's garden, and California native garden!

Why: The adobe is home to natural wild life and gardens of equal historical merit. The museum's 100 year old rose garden, cactus garden, and children's garden are all maintained by volunteers of the museum which are explored by countless visitors each year. The gardens, plants, and trees are mostly representative of California's natural environmental landscape and are a reflection of the community in which they live. Volunteers will aid in the preservation/maintanance of the site's natural foliage originally sown by members of the Dominguez family and the Claretian Missionaries. Volunteers will help promote cultivation of plants through organic and environmentally friendly practices through the museum's gardens.

Who: The Friends of Rancho San Pedro's mission is to foster community awareness of early California history, culture, and heritage and the Dominguez family through museum programs and educational resources.

What to Expect: Volunteers are always accomodated when it comes to their schedules and will be assigned a few of the following tasks:
  • Pruning, dead heading, planting, removing weeds, and general maintenance of the rose garden
  • Fertilizing and dispensing mulch in the rose garden
  • Watering California native plants in the rose garden and children's garden
  • Making, turning, and harvesting rancho compost
  • Removing weeds, sweeping pathways, and trimming foliage in the cactus garden
  • Germinating seeds/transplanting seedlings into garden beds
What's Required:
  • Be able to lift, push, or pull at least 10 pounds
  • Bend and stoop for extended periods of time
  • Be able to work in sunny areas for extended periods of time (canopies provided for shade)
  • Willing to work with roses or plants that have thorns
  • Degrees in horticulture, botany, or environmental management preferred but not required
