About this Opportunity
Invasive Plant Management at Pony Pasture
Join the James River Park System invasive plant management team to foster healthy habitat by reducing the harmful impact of invasive plants in the park system.
Before registering, please read all guidelines and instructions.
Volunteers will engage in a combination of manual and mechanical methods of controlling and removing invasive plants. The focus this July will be cutting down and removing invasive shrubs near main trails and possibly invasive vine groundcover removal in a restoration area.
No experience is necessary, but volunteers must be prepared to arrive on time for orientation and to follow all requirements and instructions.
We wil provide work gloves and tools. Volunteers MUST:
- Arrive on time.
- Wear long pants and shirts with long sleeves. Shirts should be lightweight and of ‘breathable’ material but must cover the volunteer’s arms. Yoga pants or other types of leggings are discouraged; these materials snag easily.
- Bring water. Good hydration is always essential, especially in summer.
- Notify the project leader of any allergic reactions to insect stings.
- If under 18, provide a signed waiver.
Volunteer events may be canceled due to weather conditions, including a forecast high heat index. Registered volunteers should check their email the day before and morning of the event for any changes.
Unless otherwise indicated in an email, we will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the east end of the Pony Pasture parking lot near the grassy area with picnic tables. If you need to contact the project leader the morning of the event, please call or text: 804-629-1229. Do not send an email.
