About this Opportunity
Opportunity Overview:
Appleton Farms consists of rolling grasslands, grazing livestock, stone walls, vegetable crops, and historic farm buildings, offering a rare glimpse into New England’s agricultural past. As an active working farm which hosts kid’s camp, educational activities, hikes, events, adult programming and more . . . our offices are always bustling with activity!
Currently, our staff are seeking individuals who are enthusiastic about furthering the cause of community-focused land conservation, promoting preservation and farm-based education. This volunteer position would involve walking the fence line regularly to inspect the fence for damages and alert The Trustees to major damages and conduct minor repairs if possible. The position requires the volunteer to walk through various terrain.
Reports to: Livestock & Pasture Staff

- Walk the fencing at least once weekly and after storms to inspect damage
- Repair damage if possible
- Cut back vegetation interfering with fence
- Alert The Trustees to damage (e.g., downed trees, rips in fencing)
- Assist The Trustees in repairing major damage
- Adhere to The Trustees safety protocols
- Log volunteer hours
Required:
- Ability to walk one mile or more and navigate rugged terrain.
- Must be able lift 50lbs
- Ability to communicate with Trustees staff both in the field and out of the field
- Please note: a background check is required for this role
Time Commitment Needed:
Variable, minimal time commitment is once a week. If major damage is discovered, we may ask for help repairing that damage which could be multiple hours.
