About this Opportunity
Help first generation and/or low-income college students and graduates unlock their career potential!
Why: CareerSpring Advisors advice, experience, insights and time play a critcal role in unlocking the career potential of our first generation and/or low-income college students and graduates. Career Consultations provided by Advisors instill a tremendous amount of social capital and confidence in our FGLI students and Advisors become a part of their professional networks!
Who: These volunteer, real-world professionals provide FGLI students within CareerSpring’s Network with advice on a wide variety of topics – from industry specific careers and the preparation it takes to pursue them, to more general best practices for building a professional network and navigating the college to career transition. Advisors provide this support via real-time video conferences on CareerSpring’s on-line Platform.
What to Expect: CareerSpring Advisors are volunteer professionals who are working and realizing careers all over the country, in dozens of industries. As volunteers, Advisors are not paid. Instead, they donate their time, experience, and insight, playing a critical role in CareerSpring’s mission to unlock the employment potential of first generation and/or low-income FGLI college students by providing career information, social capital, and job placement services. There are a variety of roles:- CareerSpring Advisors: Your career experience and professional path can be a source of guidance and inspiration for FGLI students. As a volunteer Advisor on CareerSpring's Platform, you will be able to network with and provide advice for FGLI students/graduates who are just starting their careers. After a short registration process, the Platform allows volunteers to set their availability so that they can connect as little or as much as they want. When you become an Advisor, students (Advisees) can reach out to you for live advisory video conferences via the Platform’s online meeting software.
- CareerSpring Candidate Coaches: Candidate Coaches are real-world professionals with human resource and talent recruitment experience. They are uniquely positioned to give Advisees advice as an active job candidate, job finalist, and/or young professionals encountering new HR dynamics in the workplace. Many FGLI students, recent graduates, and young professionals need specific coaching to improve their Job Candidate profiles including cover letters and resumes, elevator pitches, and interview skills. The best way to do this is with experts who are willing to connect one-on-one on the CareerSpring Platform. CareerSpring will offer training and curriculum resources to prepare you for your coaching sessions. You will then be able to select CC-specific advice topics for Advisees to choose from on your profile.
- CareerSpring Career Video Volunteers: CareerSpring’s Career Video Library is an online compilation of short, informally produced videos that feature real-world, working professionals discussing their career in ways that help first generation and/or low-income FGLI college students and early professionals explore a wide range of career options. Accessible through CareerSpring’s online, state-of-the-art Career Platform, career videos range from 5 – 7 minutes (on average) and cover five key topics of interest for the FGLI audience:
- A Day in the Life
- Path to the Profession
- Expectations and Fit
- Compensation, Work/Life Balance, and Impact
- I Wish I Knew
- In essence, career videos are similar to a live career talk that one might give at a school; only, the videos are strategically formatted to be more efficient (for an online audience), and are accessible to hundreds of thousands of viewers, from anywhere at any time.
What's Required: There are several characteristics that make an individual a strong fit for the Advisor role with CareerSpring. While it is not necessary for Advisor prospects to exemplify each of these characteristics to perfection, recruiting professionals who embody a variety of these qualities increases the likelihood that they will not only enjoy the Advisor volunteer experience, but also be a tremendous asset to CareerSpring’s Network.
