About this Opportunity
The Guatemalan Maya Center needs tutors for children from kindergarten through fifth grade. While formal training in education is a plus, many volunteers with other skills and experience are highly successful. The key qualification we need is that you wish to make a difference by helping children learn. Children are from low-income immigrant families.
We ask that you tutor three or four children for 30 minutes each for a total of an hour and a half to two hours between 3 and 5:45 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Tutoring is conducted at The Escuelita Maya which we operate and is located at Highland Elementary School in Lake Worth near the 10th Ave exit of I-95. Most of the children were born in the U.S. and speak English but would benefit from an English-speaking adult tutor.
There are many students who fall behind in reading and math due to subtle language and culture issues that one-on-one tutoring can help overcome. This is a tutoring opportunity with grateful students and parents where volunteer tutors can observe their students mature and improve academically day by day and year by year.
