Title: New Futures Reading Buddy
Supervisor: Program Coordinator, Grades K-6
Locations: Arbor Heights Apartments|Woodridge Park Apartments
New Futures Elementary Program: The Elementary Program provides children a safe supportive environment both after school and in the summer. Our seven-week intensive summer program focuses on sports, STEM subjects, reading, art, field trips and fun! We start the day with one hour of open reading to further our childrens reading skills.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Reading Buddy will assist the Elementary Program Coordinator during open reading time. Reading Buddies will work with grades 1-6 in both group and individual settings. Reading buddies will use reading methodology introduced by the program coordinator to help students develop and maintain reading skills during the summer. Reading buddies will also act as mentors and positive role models for the students in the program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist Program Coordinator with program activities
- Engage and build relationships with elementary school students
- Tutor elementary school students in reading
- Collaborate with Program Coordinator to develop literacy activities for students
- Assist with program set up, group management, and classroom break down
- Perform related work as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- An open, caring, and non-discriminatory attitude
- Agree to undergo a background check completed by SWYFS
- Commitment to at least one one hour reading session a week during the 7-week summer program
- Knowledge of a language other than English beneficial, but not required
