Program hours: 10:00-2:00 Monday-Friday
Location: West Seattle| White Center
Education Center: Our objective is to reach each student at their current level of education and turn their deficits into abilities, Bryan Hayes, Education Center Director
The education center offers a high school re-entry program, a GED program supportive of teen parents, and a summer writers workshop. Sites located in West Seattle and White Center
POSITION SUMMARY:
The teaching assistant will provide group and individual tutoring in at least one academic subject. In addition, the teaching assistant will work closely with staff in program implementation areas such as curriculum development, classroom preparation, tracking students progress and basic clerical and technical tasks. Teaching assistants will act as mentor and positive role models for students during the program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction:
- Tutor students individually or in small groups to reinforce presented learning material
- Present subject matter to students with the guidance of staff using methods such as lectures, discussions, worksheets, group work or supervised role-playing methods
- Observe students performance, and record relevant data to assess progress
- Provide extra assistance to students with special needs, such as non-English speaking students and students with Individual Education Plan
Supervision:
- Model and reinforce expectations for community norms and the use and care of materials
- Supervise or organize games and other recreational activities to promote, physical, mental and social development
- Assist when appropriate in personal development programs or behavior modification programs
Clerical:
- Assist in preparing teaching aids and lesson materials such as bulletin board displays
- Evaluate coursework and assessments and track results using answer sheets or electronic marking devices as needed
- When appropriate furthering the students progress by taking part in individual, team or parental meetings
Technology:
- Assist students with basic hardware and software use
- Type, file, and duplicate materials as needed
- Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment materials when necessary
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Enthusiasm, Imagination, Patience, Responsibility, Flexibility
- Ability to commit to at least one full quarter (8-9 weeks) once or twice weekly
- Agree to undergo a background check completed by SWYFS
- Competence in at least one core subject area (mathematics, language arts, social studies, science and/or college and career readiness)
- Ability to work with high risk students and an open, caring, non-discriminatory attitude
- Ability to work under minimal supervision
- Previous teaching or tutoring experience preferred
- Language proficiency in Spanish or other languages is beneficial, but not required
