About this Opportunity

Are you looking to make a difference in your community while gaining meaningful work experience? We are seeking motivated, passionate individuals who are ready to think creatively to help local programs develop, expand or enhance high-quality literacy services. As a Literacy Leader, youll spend one full year designing and carrying out initiatives in partnership with schools and community organizations. Your work will help people gain the skills they need to share their stories, achieve their goals and succeed in school and in the workforce.

As a Literacy Leader, you can work behind the scenes to create, enhance or expand literacy-focused programs for low-income, immigrant, or refugee children, youth, adults, or families. You will work side-by-side with seasoned professionals and committed volunteers at schools, community-based nonprofit organizations or local government agencies to build capacity for resource development, volunteer outreach, partnerships and content creation. In return, you will receive unique opportunities for personal and professional development, and for building marketable skills in a supportive environment.


Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national,legal permanent resident, asylee, orDACA recipient
  • Available to serve one year, full-time, Monday through Friday, typically daytime hours
  • Self-motivated,committed to serving communities in need, flexible, creative, strong communicator, organized
  • Part-time employmentor part-time classes are allowed with prior approval from Minnesota Literacy Council and yourhost site


Benefits beyond service

  • Choice of $6,095Education Award or $1,800 post-service stipend
  • Bi-weekly living allowance of $472.22
  • Healthcare allowance of up to $7,900
  • $750 relocation allowance (if relocating more than 50 miles to serve)
  • Service-related travel reimbursement

In addition to these benefits, Minnesota Literacy Leaders in our cohort receive individual professional development funds, monthly trainings, free produce shares with a local CSA, an Employee Assistance Program and subsidized Nice Ride memberships.
