Help maintain, preserve and restore two historic estates on the shores of one of the most beautiful lakes in our country – Lake Tahoe! We are seeking restoration and maintenance volunteers who are active, hard-working and interested in making visiting this site a wonderful experience for the public.

A century ago, what is now the Tallac Historic Site held the "Grandest Resort in the World" and the summer retreats for three of San Francisco Bay Area's socially elite families.  Today, the remains of the resort and the restored estates attract thousands of visitors annually to recapture this bygone and significant era in Tahoe's history. The Site is operated by the USFS in partnership with the nonprofit Tahoe Heritage Foundation.

Tahoe Heritage Foundation seeks restoration and maintenance volunteers who are active, hard-working and interested in making visiting this site a wonderful experience for the public.

Season and shifts: The Tallac Historic Site is open to the public seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend through last weekend of September. The volunteer season is divided into 3 sessions, 8 weeks each. Volunteers may stay one, two or three consecutive or alternating sessions, depending upon availability. Please specify your session preference and availability on your application.

The Site is fully open Memorial Day Weekend seven days a week for programs, tours, special events, museum and gift shop. Volunteers are very involved in these daily activities. Maintenance and restoration projects are ongoing.

Location: The Tallac Historic Site is located along Highway 89 on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, three miles north of South Lake Tahoe.

Duties: The Tallac Historic Site includes many historic buildings, all of which are quite old and in need of regular preservation, restoration, and maintenance. This may include anything from painting, shingling, repairing of windows and shutters, to carpentry, plumbing, masonry and electrical work. In addition, the Site includes lawns, gardens, trails and pathways, many trees, a pond, a fountain and more. Upkeep includes, mowing, raking, trimming, trash pickup, draining and cleaning, irrigation

Restoration and Maintenance Volunteers serve under the direction of Forest Service Site Maintenance staff. If it needs fixing, the volunteers will have their hands in it… and something always needs fixing!

This position often involves strenuous activity.

Many activities on the Site require lifting, hauling, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs and ladders, and walking on uneven surfaces. Activities may include walking, standing and /or sitting outdoors or in non-climate controlled buildings for hours at a time.  Volunteers must be able to work alone or as part of a team, with or without direct supervision.

RV Volunteers serve four days/28 hours each week in exchange for an RV camping site. If couples are applying, please note that both volunteers are required to commit to 28 hours per week each.

Housing and Amenities: RV campsites are made available through the Tahoe Heritage Foundation to volunteers traveling from out of the area (50 miles from site). Sites include water & power hookups and shared laundry facilities. Most sites include sewer hookups. You must provide your own RV - no tents allowed. Unfortunately, we are not able to assist with other housing accommodations.
