About this Opportunity
The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests' Lee Ranger District is looking for volunteers to serve as Campground Hosts at the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area. Elizabeth Furnace is a popular recreation area.
Elizabeth Furnace has 30 camping sites, 2 interpretive trails that describe the turn-of-the-century iron industry, a log cabin visitor center/interpretive association outlet, and a large day-use area. Hikers and fishermen frequent this area. Elizabeth Furnace is located at the northern end of the Massanutten Mountain near Strasburg, VA and is approximately 70 miles west of Washington DC. We ask our Hosts to spend a minimum of 1 month at this facility. Host sites have full hook-ups.
Campground Host Duties:
- Provide visitor information
- Welcome visitors and assist them in checking into their sites
- Clean restrooms as needed
- Open and close the area gates each day
- Perform minor maintenance as needed
Campground Hosts are asked to serve 5 days a week for a total of approximately 25-30 hours per week. Hosts are given 2 days off in a row to enjoy the area.
Duties can vary depending on individual preferences and abilities and are agreed to in writing prior to the Host's arrival. Forest Service campgrounds on the Lee District offer campground hosts electric, water, sewer and telephone hookups. Also available are flush toilets with hot-water showers, parking spurs that can accommodate RVs up to approximately 40 feet and a sewage dump station. Volunteer will provide their own trailer or RV.
