About this Opportunity
Fort Pulaski National Monument is seeking dependable volunteers to assist with park grounds care. March through October, grounds care volunteers help keep the grounds surrounding historic Fort Pulaski beautiful for hundreds of thousands of visitors. Grounds care activities include mowing, weed-wacking, using blowers to remove debris, litter clean up, light trail maintenance, and other light landscaping duties.
Ideal grounds care volunteers should not be allergic to grass, should not have chronic back pain, and should be able to tolerate heat and humidity. Interested volunteers should exhibit a passion for preserving America’s National Parks and should be able to work independently. The park will provide all necessary training and protective equipment for safely operating riding mowers and other machinery. Typically, grounds care volunteers begin early in the day (6:30-7:00 am) to avoid hot afternoon heat and to be able to work inside Fort Pulaski without disturbing visitors.
RV pads are available for volunteers willing to work 32 hours per week, four days per week, and three consecutive months. Amenities include water, electrical, and septic hook-ups, picnic tables, and free laundry facilities near the RV area. Unfortunately, we cannon provide television or internet at this time. There is no public camping in the park; the RV area is private and includes four concrete pads. Couples traveling together may work together or in separate volunteer positions.
Fort Pulaski National Monument lies eighteen miles east of Savannah, Georgia. The monument encompasses 5000 acres of marshland on McQueen’s Island and 600 acres of dry land on Cockspur Island. The park’s primary resource is the nineteenth century masonry fortification. Built between 1829 and 1847 to defend Savannah, Fort Pulaski saw action during the Civil War. Other historic resources in the park include the ruins of a small village and wharf, an 1890s era concrete battery, and a small lighthouse. Cockspur Island also provides recreational opportunities for trail walking, birding, bicycling, fishing, and more, while McQueen’s island is popular for boating and fishing.
