Volunteer Interpretive Guide 2021 and Beyond

Do you have a passion for your National Park and would you enjoy sharing that passion with people from around the World?

More than 2 million visitors come to Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park every year, wanting to learn about volcanoes, see endangered plants and birds, or get as close to molten lava as they can.

You could be a volunteer that answers their questions at the Visitor Center, lead them on hikes, give educational talks, and open the door of opportunity for them to become stewards of this unique national resource.

Your training will include: How to interpret this Park through geology, botany, biology and the Hawaiian Culture; Development of educational talks and hikes; Conservation and preservation; and Working as a team member/player.

Terms and training sessions begin: February, June, and September

Skills we are seeking:

• The most important quality is the desire to make a positive difference in your National Park
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work well with a diverse workforce and public.
• Good communication skills, including good listening skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Prior experience working with youth is a major plus.
• Solid organizational skills.
• Knowledge of Hawaiian Cultural concepts is desirable.
• Be creative, innovative, and understand tailoring conversations to best meet the needs of diverse audiences.
• Knowledge of other languages helpful.
• Valid state driver's license.

Training:

Volunteer will attend a week-long, 40 hour training in National Park Service mission, goals and procedures, volunteer-in-parks program operations and customer service upon initial appointment.
