About this Opportunity

Volunteers will assist the Refuge with day to day operations and be exposed to a wide range of tasks. Flexible work hours; may include some evening hours. Tasks include staffing the visitor center and nature store, greeting the general public, answering questions and providing information to visitors, counting visitors, general building maintenance, lawn care, gardening, trail and sign maintenance, assisting with environmental education and outreach programs, helping with wildlife surveys and leading/or assisting with refuge tours. Some opportunities including computer access and working with children will require a federal background check which will be handled by the refuge. A valid state driver’s license is required to operate government vehicles. References are required and contacted.

A minimum of 25 service hours for each individual per week is required. Volunteers will be required to provide their own factory-built RV. The Refuge has two sites with full hookups, including electricity, water and sewer. Free Wi-Fi internet service is available. Laundry and a shower facilitiy is available. Friendly, well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome; no outside cats. Commitment of at least 2 months is preferred.

The Headquarter Unit is located in south Bossier City and amenities are conveniently located within a few miles of the refuge.  The Visitor Center and Education Center opened in 2012. We have five miles of mowed hiking trails that circle around an oxbow lake and one black-top handicap accessible trail. A canoe or kayak is available for volunteers.  We loan out binoculars too. Over 245 species of birds have been observed and we are a hotspot for dragonflies and butterflies also. We offer fishing on the Headquarters refuge lake, great wildlife viewing, and some hunting. When in season you can pick pecans or wild plums. In June and July, we host summer camps for youth and family fun days.  In October, we hold our annual Wildlife Celebration and in spring we welcome back migratory birds with Bird Day. Most volunteer work will be done at the headquarters unit but there are opportunities to work on our other three refuge units within the Red River Valley.
