National Capital Region Office of CommunicationsReceptionist / Public Affairs Volunteer
This is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain experience in the Public Relations field!
The National Capital Region of the National Park Service provides support to 14 National Parks in Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia.
The Office of Communications staff writes and edits press releases and other types of media, and answers public inquiries about parks, public programs, and special events. The Communications Office phone number is the public information number for the National Capital Region (NCR).
Job Setting: Office, with occassional assistance requested at special events.
Duties:Volunteer will assist with the following duties in the National Capital Region Office of Communications:
Promptly answer public inquiries and information requests received via phone, postal mail, or email. Inquiries may include information about National Parks, special events, and public programs. Answers will be in verbal or written form.
Assist with filing and clerical duties as assigned, including typing and writing cover letters for routine correspondence and other types of written communication.
May be asked to assist at major public events in the region, such as the Christmas Pageant of Peace, Cherry Blossom Festival, etc.
Time Commitment: One four-hour shift minimum per week. 2 shifts per week preferred. Shifts do not have to be consecutive.
Shifts Available: 9 am to 1 pm, or 1 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Volunteer may also be asked to occasionally assist with special events. Some special events may include weekend shifts.
Skills Needed:Strong verbal and written skills. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently. Ability to use basic word processing programs; experience in advanced types of word processing (Pagemaker, InDesign) a plus. Graphic design or layout skills a plus.
Training Provided:Intern will receive orientation to the 14 parks in the National Capital Region, as well as training in Public Relations and National Park Service protocols.
