About this Opportunity

The Maintenance Division is responsible for performing tasks and duties related to landscape maintenance, painting, carpentry, electrical repair or installation, janitorial and custodial duties.

Working Conditions

Work is indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions. Work also requires standing for long periods.

Necessary Skills

Depending on level of experience, many duties require no prior job training or experience. Use of a variety of hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, measuring tapes, etc., is required.

Duties May Include:

  • Janitorial/custodial duties in visitor center, administrative and historic buildings. Sweep, dust surfaces, clean picnic facilities, and perform related tasks.
  • Landscape maintenance including the operation of various gasoline-powered mowers and yard vacuums, electric hedge trimmers, and a variety of hand tools.
  • Assist in fertilizing, weeding, planting shrubs and grass; simple tree trimming/pruning, mulching, and related tasks.
  • May assist skilled maintenance workers in non-technical work such as basic carpentry or painting.
  • Maintain hand tools and similar equipment and may perform basic operator maintenance on power equipment.
  • Share a basic knowledge of Sagamore Hill, the Roosevelt family, and other general information with park visitors.

Physical Effort

Work requires light to moderate physical effort such as frequently lifting and carrying objects, bending, stooping and reaching, using ladders, vacuum cleaners, etc.

Training

The general training for all volunteers will be performed by the Chief of Maintenance or his/her designees. The supervisor provides the volunteer with specific training for the tasks assigned, to enable the volunteer to work in a satisfactory manner.

Evaluation

The Chief of Maintenance and Volunteer Supervisor will evaluate the volunteer's performance on the following factors:

• Ability to follow directions

• Ability to work in a safe manner

• Familiarity with park operations and regulations

• Willingness to work in other park divisions
