About this Opportunity

Bicycle along the Multi-Use Trail as a welcoming representative of the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Greet visitors, answer visitor questions about the Park and the Trail, and distribute Park literature as requested.

Inform visitors about rules and regulations along the Multi-Use Trail and the Parkway, and the reasons for such rules.

Report signs of facility damage, maintenance needs, criminal activity, etc. to their supervisor. Maintenance needs will written up and submitted to their supervisor by email, fax or mail.

Assist visitors in emergency situations by contacting the proper personnel.

Provide basic bicycle repair assistance as needed.

Assist, within your level of training, victims of injury or illness until the arrival of emergency medical personnel.

Potential to provide informative bike programs to visitors.

Bike Patrol volunteers will wear the proper and complete volunteer uniform while performing their duties.

Will keep a log of volunteer hours worked and submit it monthly to the volunteer coordinator by email, fax or mail. The form will be due by the 5th of the following month (ex July 5th for the month of June).

Working Conditions

Work is outside, sometimes in hot, cold, wet, humid or windy weather.

Items Provided to Bike Patrol Volunteers

First Aid Kit (in fanny pack). Basic Bike Repair Kit. Bike Patrol Safety Vest or shirt. Headlight and tail light in working condition (if biking before sunrise or after sunset). Bicycle in safe working condition. Park radio.

Items Provided by Bike Patrol Volunteers

Good attitude and enthusiasm for the job. Working cell phone. Water Bottles. Sunscreen. Bug spray.

Bicycle in safe working condition. Properly fitted Helmet. Headlight and tail light in working condition (if biking before sunrise or after sunset). Shorts or pants (bike or regular) in khaki, blue, or black.

Skill Required

Ability to handle a bicycle safely. Ability to get along with people. Ability to remain calm and friendly when confronted by visitors. Ability to physically get out and ride along the Multi-Use Trail. Ability to adapt to changing work conditions. Currently certified in First Aid and CPR.

Time Commitment

A minimum of four (4) hours per month, in blocks of not less than 1 hour.

Supervision and Training Provided

Bike Patrol Volunteer will attend an orientation session prior to independently conducting bike patrol. Bike Patrol Volunteers will also attend a ride along with either a law enforcement or interpretative ranger prior to first patrol. Will be supervised by either the District Ranger or District Interpretive Ranger or their designee. The park film, literature, and ranger programs are available to gain more knowledge of the Parkway and surrounding area. First Aid and CPR classes will be made available to Bike Patrol volunteers. Training will be provided in Park radio usage. Supervisor will complete midseason and end of season evaluation of work.

Note

Bike Patrol volunteers must successfully pass a background check to be selected for this position.

Other Requirements

Bike Patrol volunteers will be required to check out equipment prior to their bike patrol. This equipment can be picked up at a designated location. Volunteers will also be required to check in with their supervisor at the beginning of their shift and check out with their supervisor at the end of their shift.
