About this Opportunity

Accessibility Support Assistants work closely with Interpretation & Education, Facilities, Natural Resources Department, and/or Management to manage various aspects of the park related to accessibility for visitors and staff with disabilities. Support can be provided for park architectural design, programmatic aspects, and/or electronic communications and information.

Position Title. Accessibility Support Assistant

Supervisor(s). Cabrillo Accessibility Coordinator

Work Location. Cabrillo National Monument or Remote Location

Time Committment. Flexible and ongoing. The more you enjoy it the more we can do!

Major Duties

  • Assist with unique projects and administrative tasks requested by both management staff and volunteer coordinators.
  • Ensure a safe environment for staff, volunteers, and the public by adhering to safety and health regulations (See “Safety Considerations”).
  • Sign up for shifts and log in appropriate hours in a timely manner.
  • Review Cabrillo National Monument’s Accessibility Self Evaluation and Transition Plan. Make suggestions for ways you can support this plan.
  • Architectural Design – Clean tactile statues and wayside signs, provide input on existing architectural features and relay information about needs.
  • Programmatic Aspects – Review and provide feedback on existing and new interpretive programs for access to individuals with disabilities, record short programs about the park from the perspective of a person with a disability. (Follow NPS standards for recording.)
  • Electronic Communication and Information – Review and provide feedback regarding access to the Cabrillo website and social media posts, support staff in trainings for accessibility needs.
  • Other appropriate duties related to your skills can be discussed with the supervisor.

Safety Considerations

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cleaning statues and signs.
  • Ensure proper use of office supplies such as scissors, box cutters, step stools, ladders, paper shredders, and other various tools.
  • Ensure care when lifting heavy boxes.
  • Follow the NPS Social Media guidelines. Do not engage with angry or hostile comments on Social Media.

Qualifications (knowledge, skills, experience, ability)

  • Be able to transport yourself to and from the park (if on site).
  • Be fit for duty, as outlined in “Major Duties” and “Safety Consideration”.
  • Be reliable, committed, and flexible to new ideas.
  • Be able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Maintain ability to handle sensitive material and/or information (including personally identifiable information) with discretion and confidentiality.
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess the desire to connect with visitors and staff of all ages and cultures.
  • Possess competence with radios, computers, and other electronic devices.

Required Trainings/Certifications. All applicants must attend and complete a general New Volunteer Orientation. This includes the following:

  • Tour the park (onsite or remotely).
  • Sign a Volunteer Service Agreement and Position Description.
  • Create a volunteer account.
  • Attend appropriate radio and safety trainings (if working onsite)

Required Personal Property (if any). This position does not require the use of personal property, as all PPE will be provided by the park. If you are planning on bringing personal equipment, you must let your supervisor know in advance.

Authorized Reimbursements (if any). This position does not include any authorized reimbursements. If supplies are needed, you can request them through your supervisor.
