About this Opportunity
Location Description
Located 50 miles south of Washington, D.Cc and 50 miles north of Richmond, VA, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park comprises 8,000 acres preserving four major Civil War battlefields -- Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House.
Position Description
Historical Interpreters are predominantly needed for the spring, summer and fall. Volunteers in this position assist park visitors to plan their stay and research and answer historical questions. Some volunteers receive additional training and conduct guided walking tours over the battlefields. Volunteers help at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center and Chatham Manor.
Potential volunteers will attend an 8 hour class with other volunteer candidates. The class is an orientation to the park as well as training on informal interpretation with a significant amount of role playing. For candidates who decide that they wish to proceed and volunteer, the next step is to do some reading on the subject and take an audio tour covering the site the volunteer will work. Next will be on-the-job training with the site supervisor of that location. We ask for a minimum donation of 8 hours per month.
