Job Title: Rock Climbing Area Monitor

Overview: Foot patrols of rock climbing areas.

Opportunity Description: Volunteers are needed to provide patrols of rock climbing areas within the parks and provide feedback to park staff.

Duties: 1. Provide patrols of rock climbing areas and monitor climbing activity. Interacts with climbers and provides information and education to park users on park regulations and policies. 2. Provide patrols of rock climbing areas and note changes that might include trees or brush cut down; rocks moved or rolled from the cliff top; digging activity; bolt, gear, or anchor replacement; and more. Is extra set of eyes and ears for protection ranger staff. 3. Provide patrols of rock climbing areas and monitor compliance with the parks Climbing Management Plan. 4. Provide patrols of rock climbing areas and monitor commercial and private climbing group size and compliance with the parks Special Use Permit and Commercial Use Authorization program. 5. Provide patrols of rock climbing areas and report to rangers any illegal activity including violations of the CMP, SUP, or CUA program; vandalism; drug and alcohol use; pet violations; camping; and more. Provides rangers with results of patrols. 6. Interacts with local climber groups and park partners; commercial climbing guide services; private citizens and park visitors. 7. May participate as a member of volunteer technical SAR team and on volunteer trail improvement projects. 8. Represents the NPS and park mission, initiatives, programs, plans, regulations, principles, and laws while in volunteer status.

Work Location: Various locations where rock climbing takes place.

Work Environment: Must be able to work outside in varying weather conditions in rocky, cliffy, and vertical terrain. Hiking and foot travel is necessary.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience: Required: Knowledge of rock climbing techniques, rope safety, and of the park climbing areas. The ability to represent the NPS to a variety of climbers. Able to communicate and work with others. Ability to hike into climbing areas and access the cliff top and bottom. A moderate to high level of fitness. The ability to take direction from a superior and or other park employees.
