About this Opportunity
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is currently seeking a local volunteer to assist in identifying the stewardship needs of the cultural landscape of the Ranch District of the Park, located near Stonewall. Cultural landscapes are geographic areas that that are associated with a historic event which reveal much about our evolving relationship with the natural world. Work alongside national park employees to help preserve the park’s rich collection of resources. The volunteer will assist park staff in researching existing natural resource plans and reports, participate in committee meetings, and conduct fieldwork. Training will be provided. Work schedule is flexible, but a minimum commitment of eight hours per week is preferred. A background investigation must be conducted per Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 and the Department of Interior Regulations. The cost of the background check is paid by the park.
Duties
- Work with staff to monitor and inventory landscape and resource conditions
- Assist with photo documentation/surveying of riparian area
- Read through existing inventory and verify that documentation aligns with current conditions
- If needed, identify new care for cultural landscape features
- Research and compile documentation on management of riparian area
Skills
- Experience in research preferred
- Interest in History, Cultural/Natural Resource Management and/or Land Management recommended
- Comfortable working outside in various weather conditions and walking on uneven surfaces
- Self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as part of a team
