About this Opportunity
The Ava Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri is seeking a volunteer to serve as campground host May 1, 2020 through September 30, 2020. The host would be provided with a site at the North Fork Campground on the beautiful north fork of the White River near Dora, Missouri. The host site is suitable for the host's own trailer or recreation vehicle (RV), and offers electricity and sewer service. There is no internet service or cell service, though a phone is available for emergency use. North Fork Campground has 20 sites including the host site; there is only one other site with electricity, so it is a fairly primitive campground.
Duties of the Host are to greet campers, provide information and assistance if needed, and clean campsites when a camper leaves (pick up litter, clean fire rings and picnic tables, etc.). Host will also do daily chlorine residual testing for water system and keep 3 vault toilets clean. The Host should have good people skills and be responsible and neat in appearance. The Host must be physically able to perform such tasks as raking, shoveling, mopping and sweeping, performing minor maintenance, inspecting the campground, keeping simple maintenance records, monitoring area use, and occasionally filling out forms.
Host will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions. Any vandalism or other problems should be reported to Forest Service personnel. All necessary tools, supplies, and safety equipment will be provided by the Forest Service, along with appropriate training. The host should be in the campground and available to the public 5 days out of each week, plus holidays, per their volunteer agreement. Days typically needing coverage are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Service hours are 8 am to 5 pm, but Hosts may be called upon 24 hours per day if needed.
North Fork is going through renovations so there may be added traffic in and out as a result. The renovation includes separating water play use with water craft use; a new boat ramp with parking is being constructed.
Volunteer campground hosts will receive reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses of $18/day for single; $22/day for a couple.
