About this Opportunity
Wallkill River NWR is located in rural Sussex County, New Jersey amid beautiful rolling hills and peaceful valleys. Wildlife abound; yet still only over an hour’s drive to New York City. The refuge currently owns over 6,000 acres with 10 miles of the gently flowing Wallkill River running through it. Within the refuge boundary are 5 hiking trails including a portion of the Appalachian Trail. There are three designated kayak/canoe access points along the river as well as a 50 acre lake with a handicapped fishing dock and kayak launch. The refuge headquarters is located in a beautifully renovated farm house.
We are a small, friendly staff that enjoys what we do and are looking for the right individual or couple to compliment our team.
The refuge is seeking a maintenance volunteer for the 2020 summer season.
Duties include:
- Mowing & maintaining hiking trails and boat launch areas.
- Assist with various construction type projects that may involve carpentry skills, electrical & plumbing type work.
- Maintain neat appearance of public use areas.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining 2 outdoor restroom locations.
- FWS Heavy Equipment Certification would be highly useful though it is not required.
A complete hook-up; water, electricity, free propane, and laundry facilities are provided in exchange for a minimum of 24 hours per week for a single volunteer and 32 hours per week for a volunteer couple.
