Description:

Volunteer to help maintain the trails in Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. The trails are part of the historic battlefield where Union General William Sherman and Confederate General Joseph Johnston’s armies engaged in combat on June 27, 1864.

Trail Club Crew Leaders, which are members of the Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club, will assist the National Park Service (NPS) in the building, maintaining, improving, and enhancing trails within Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Crew Leaders lead groups of Trail Club Crew members who perform park trail and landscape maintenance.

As a crew leader, the volunteer will assist in the implementation of trail work days by leading a group of 10-15 volunteers performing park trail and landscape maintenance. Crew leaders are responsible for managing their team’s actions and keeping crew members on task.

DUTIES:

  • Ensure the safety of their crew by explaining the work to be performed, the proper use of specific tools, the potential hazards and emergency procedures.
  • Create a positive and pleasant experience that is within the realm of their crews’ abilities.
  • Adhere to park rules, comply with guidelines in the trail maintenance plan and protect the park’s historic artifacts from damage.
  • Hike their crews on park trails to assigned work site.

ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Supervisory Skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Ability to use and teach the safe use of hand tools such as loppers, hand saws, shovels, rakes, and pulaskis.

All crew leaders must complete the required crew leader certification program and be trained on any equipment they are using. Training provided by the Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club. 

NOTE: Volunteer projects generally take place on Saturday mornings (every second Saturday of each month. March – November begins at 8:30am. December – February (winter schedule) begin at 11:00 am); however, there are some projects which take place weekdays.
