Schoodic Institute Campus Hosts Position Description, Summer – Fall 2020   Updated 08/22/2019

This Campus Hosts position is a volunteer situation for a couple to share together in Acadia National Park’s Schoodic District Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park, located in Winter Harbor, Maine.

The purpose of this position is to provide two people (a couple) with an opportunity to volunteer their time to a national organization with an important vison and mission, and in return, they are provided comfortable housing in a beautiful National Park for the allotted time of their service.

The Campus Host coupe will report to and be managed by the Schoodic Institute Welcome Center Manager. The NPS Volunteer Coordinator may work with the Welcome Center Manager to facilitate activities of the campus hosting couple.

• Campus Hosts who are chosen must reside in one of the institute apartment units on the campus.  Please apply ONLY IF you are looking for a position with housing included.  An RV site does not come with this position - since this is NOT a campground - it is a campus. Housing is provided in a comfortable 2 bedroom apartment with all amenities.
• There are 2 (3 month) terms of service for campus hosting that are available:  May 1 – July 31, or August 1 – Oct 31.  Term of service will be a mutual decision between hosts and the Welcome Center Manager. 

Primary Duties: 

• Most daytime duties will take place at the Rockefeller Hall Welcome Center:  greeting visitors in a professional manner and answering questions about Schoodic Institute and Acadia National Park.  Other duties will be: handing out maps, giving out information /directions, explaining exhibits and selling items from a small gift shop in the Welcome Center.
• The Campus Hosts must be able to communicate the mission of Schoodic Institute and Acadia National Park in a friendly knowledgeable manner.

Secondary Duties:

• Being on duty on scheduled days and nights for late check-ins or to give assistance to guests staying on campus after hours.
• Inspect and lock campus facilities on a nightly walk and close any open doors, windows/buildings.
• Assist the Maintenance department with campus-wide recycling 1-2 hours on a daily basis.
• Assist Hospitality staff to prepare materials and keys for guests checking in. (Hosts should have basic computer knowledge in WORD and EXCEL).  Other office duties may be assigned as needed.
• In the absence of Schoodic Institute staff after business hours, the Campus Hosts will act as the primary point of contact for all guests. The hosts’ apartment and phone number are published on campus as the primary after hours emergency contact for those who are campus guests who may need general help.  If there is a medical emergency, Hosts are expected to dial 911 to get local help.
• Hosts may be asked to assist with group check-ins in other buildings and help with a variety of institute events ie; setting up and breaking down tables and chairs and moving event items. Hosts must be willing to do errands off campus and be able to distribute event posters and flyers around the local communities.
• Hosts must have valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s licenses to drive a government vehicle and must be capable of operating an NPS radio and phone.

Schedule:

This Campus Hosting position requires a 3 month volunteer term during either of the following time periods.  (These terms are determined by the needs of Schoodic Institute’s Welcome Center’s visitor attendance.  The hosting work week consists of a minimum of 32 hours per week, per individual campus host volunteer).    

Term #1:  May 1 through July 31.              Term #2:  August 1 through Oct 31.

• The Campus Hosts will receive 4 days on and 4 days off within an 8 day period.  During the 4 days on, Campus Hosts are expected to work at the Welcome Center and remain on the campus to be available at their apartment for any guest who needs assistance or attention.  On days off, hosts may leave the campus and explore other regions of Maine.  All scheduling will be done by the Welcome Center Manager and mutually agreed upon by both parties.
• Volunteer time sheets will be submitted to the NPS Volunteer Coordinator at the end of each month.
