Visitor Center Services Assistant

The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge took place on a frigid, early morning February 27, 1776. The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, fought between North Carolina Patriot and Loyalist militia forces, demonstrates the bitter internal divisions that marked the American Revolution. Moores Creek is the site of the first Patriot victory in the American Revolution and the site of the last Scottish Highland broadsword charge. The victory ended British authority in the colony and stalled British invasion of the South for four and a half years.

It also led North Carolina to be the first colony to instruct ists delegates to the 1776 Continental Congress to vote for independence.

Moores Creek National Battlefield is approximately 87 acres and offers a 3/4-mile walking loop that cuts through the heart of the battlefield, a 1/4-mile nature loop that is used by many natural and wildlife enthusiasts, a picnic area with several picnic sites and charcoal grills, and an Colonial living history area that is used to present educational programs by the NPS.

The park is located about 13 miles from the town of Burgaw and 21 miles from the city of Wilmington, in the coastal area  of North Carolina. Temperatures can be hot and muggy in summer; average highs in the upper 80s and sometimes lower 90s. Winters are generally moderate with temperatures that can range from highs in the 30s to about 60 degrees. Spring and Fall bring very enjoyable temperatures.

Calling all history lovers! Moores Creek National Battlefield is currently seeking volunteers to work in Visitor Services. Duties of this position include: • Work with other NPS to staff the visitor center information desk, to include opening & closing procedures as needed • Provide visitors with area information • Orient visitors to the park, to include informing them of programs that are offered • Operate audio-visual programs • Educate visitors of the historical significance of the park • Maintain accurate tally of visitors entering the visitor center and attending programs • Assist in operation of Junior Ranger Program • Assist in Eastern National bookstore operations • Ensure visitors have an understanding of park rules and regulations, and that these regulations are important to protect resources within the park and to ensure safety of visitors • Battlefield roving as needed • Answer frequently asked questions in person and over the phone • As needed, conduct park closing procedures using a government vehicle, to include informing visitors park is closing, locking gates and bathrooms, setting alarms, obtaining vehicle count numbers for the day • Provide assistance during special events • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and evenings • Volunteer uniform required- shirts and name tags are issued, slacks are required but not issued. Skills & Qualifications Required: • Must enjoy interacting with people and have great customer service skills • Must have a love of the knowledge of history, and be willing to learn about the Battle of Moores Creek, the park’s history, and the resources that lie within the park • Must be able to learn cash register operations, including the accurate handling of money and credit card processes • Minimum age 18 , 16 with parental consent• Must possess a valid driver’s license • All volunteers must be able to pass a background investigation

Volunteers are representatives of the National Park Service and are expected to present themselves in a neat and professional manner.

Moores Creek has limited cell phone service and no Wi-Fi.  Verizon and US Cellular are the two that have OK service, the others do not.

Working in Visitor Services is an exciting opportunity for folks who enjoy meeting and talking with people from around the globe, and who are passionate about educating people of all ages on aspects of the American Revolution.

Local Volunteers are requested to work one full (8-hour) day per week, oftentimes a weekend day. More hours may be available if requested by volunteer. Local volunteers are also requested to help with special events, as their schedules allow.

RV Volunteers: The park has two RV pads available for volunteers who commit to no less than 4 weeks and can extend to 3 consecutive months of service. One RV occupant must work a 32 hours per week schedule and will have 3 consecutive days off to explore. Second RV occupant is optional and can work the same schedule, if desired, or other scheduling options can be considered. Volunteers may also participate in the parks living history program.  PLEASE check on your cell phone service in this area. Reception within the park can be erratic at times, the extent depending on service provider. Pets are permitted.

Weather: Summers can be hot, humid and buggy (mosquitoes). The Spring and Fall are cool with rainy periods. Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor’easter storms.

Transportation: Personal transportation (bicycle or motorized vehicle) is required to reach local stores. There is no public transportation in the area.

Medical Facilities: Local medical centers provide basic treatment. The nearest hospital is 20 minutes away.  Wilmington, North Carolina has several hospitals and large medical facilities just 30 minutes from the park.
