About this Opportunity
The South Texas Refuge Complex Habitat Restoration program is seeking local volunteers (individuals and groups) to assist with native plant propagation and forest restoration projects during the 2020-2021 season. The Habitat Restoration Program annually produces over 250,000 native tree and shrub seedlings and, through combined efforts of USFWS staff, volunteers, students, and partners, restores the native thornforests of south Texas. The program focuses on plant production and seed collection from April through September. Outplanting of the seedlings on Refuge lands occurs from October through March.
Volunteer opportunities from April – September will primarily include seed collection and processing, soil mixing and filling propagation containers, and watering and transplanting seedlings within an outdoor plant nursery setting. Volunteer duties from October – March will primarily include preparing tree and shrub seedlings for outplanting, watering seedlings, transporting plants and supplies to field sites, and assisting with field operations. Other duties will include assisting in general maintenance of the nursery facilities, including vegetation maintenance and light carpentry projects.
Volunteers will have regular interactions with USFWS staff, interns, and school groups.
Volunteer commitments for groups is requested in increments of 1 day (6+ hours) and will be determined based on group size and time of year. Volunteer commitments for individuals is requested at a minimum of 1 full day/week. For more information or to set up a group opportunity, please contact Kimberly Wahl at [email protected].
