About this Opportunity
Volunteer to transcribe records contained in the Steamtwon National Historic Site Archives. The park has a world-class archives of information related to the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad as well as other significant rail-related collections that need transcibed. You can be part of the effort to enhance searchability and access for everyone, from scholarly academic research to historic structures preservation to family history and genealogical requests. Our virtual transcribers have made thousands of documents accessible!
Requirements include:
- Access to a personal computer with Microsoft Word programming.
- Internet and email access.
- Attention to detail in transcribing script, typewritten, or printed historical documents.
- Must be at least 15 years of age to participate.
While previous transciption experience is useful, anyone who meets the above requirements can provide valuable volunteering from the comfort of one's own home. You will be able to coordinate with the park historian the appropriate number of scanned documents you wish to work on at any given time; they will be emailed to you. While the historian may periodically email to inquire on your progress, there is no set time limit for completing the transcriptions; accuracy is the key to a useful transcription. When the transcription is completed, email the scanned document and the transcribed Word document back to the park historian.
Contact Historian Patrick McKnight at 570-340-5193 with any questions.
