RV Camper Volunteers at Great Swamp NWR

Great Swamp NWR is located in Morris County, just 26 miles west of New York City. Located near the headwaters of the Passaic River, the refuge is comprised of approximately 7,800 acres of freshwater marsh, managed wetlands, forests and shrublands. There are more than 10 miles of trails divided among two major areas within the refuge: the management area and the wilderness area.

The refuge was originally established to provide feeding and resting areas for migrating birds, so spring and fall are the most popular times for wildlife and visitors alike. Wildlife abounds, with frequent sightings of foxes, ducks, geese, various warblers, and even a pair of bald eagles. Total annual visitation for the refuge is estimated at around 150,000 visitors.

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is seeking enthusiastic, friendly, and outgoing volunteers with their own RV to assist staff in the day to day activities of the refuge. We provide a full hookup (water, sewer [requires longer hose], and electricity) in exchange for 24 hours per week for a single volunteer and 32 hours per week for a volunteer couple. We require a minimum stay of 6 weeks, but longer is preferable. A fridge/freezer, washer, and dryer are located at the refuge's RV site for shared use as well. Washer has cold water washes only. Hot water washing machine is available at no charge at another building about 3 miles away.

Visitor Services volunteers staff the refuge visitor center, greet and orient visitors, answer the phone, help operate a small nature store, sell/issue America the Beautiful passes, keep visitor center tidy, and brochure racks filled. Resident volunteers can assist with environmental education programs, outreach, and special events. There is a need for volunteers to lead archery classes (National Archery in the Schools Program), as well as potentially assist with off-refuge fishing events. Our visitor center is staffed 7 days a week, so a willingness to work weekends is required. General Maintenance volunteers assist with: facilities and grounds maintenance, light painting, mowing, weeding, trimming, and equipment repairs.  Ability to work with hand tools and small mowers required. Carpentry skills are appreciated.

A valid driver’s license is required to operate a government vehicle. Applicants with FWS training certificates are always in demand.
