About this Opportunity

The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests' Lee Ranger District is looking for volunteer Campground Hosts for two of their recreation areas:  Trout Pond located near Lost River, WV and Elizabeth Furnace located near Strasburg, VA.

Both areas are popular destination areas for camping, hiking and fishing.

Trout Pond Recreation Area has 50 campsites and boasts two beautiful lakes: Rock Cliff Lake and Trout Pond, a swim beach, playground and access to hiking trails, while Elizabeth Furnace has 30 camping sites, 2 interpretive trails that describe the turn-of-the-century iron industry, a log cabin visitor center/interpretive association outlet and a large day-use area.

Hosts are asked to stay a minimum of one month. Host sites have full hook-ups.

Campground Host Duties: Provide visitor information, welcome visitors and assist them in checking into their sites, clean restrooms, open and close area gates each day, and perform minor maintenance as needed.  Campground Hosts are asked to work five days a week for a total of approximately 25-32 hours per week. Hosts are given two days off in a row to enjoy the area.

Duties can vary depending on individual preferences and abilities and are agreed to in writing prior to the Host's arrival. Forest Service campgrounds on the Lee District offer campground hosts electric, water, sewer and telephone hookups.  Also available are flush toilets with hot-water showers, parking spurs that can accommodate RV's up to approximately 36 feet and a sewage dump station. Volunteers will need to provide their own trailer or RV.
