Visitor Center Assistant

TIME COMMITMENT: Minimum of one day per week (4-8 hour shift) SUPERVISOR: Lead Interpretive Ranger DUTIES: Operates information and sales desks, Completes necessary training for visitor services volunteers and employees, Achieves certification in Module 102 of the Interpretive Development Program (Effective Informal Interpretation), Greets visitors and provides orientation to the Battlefield and interpretive themes, Makes public announcements, Presents short (5-minute) orientation talks as needed, Provides informal interpretation using NPS standards and techniques, Assists rangers in opening and closing the building, Keeps an accurate count of visitors entering the building, Monitors stocks of brochures and handouts and makes them available to visitors according to established standards, Provides research assistance and responds to in-depth questions about the battle as needed, and Performs sales operations in the Eastern National book store. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner, General knowledge of the Civil War and the Battle of Stones River are desirable, Must be able to stand for long periods of time, and Must be able to speak clearly. TRAINING PROVIDED (R-Required, O-Optional) Volunteer Orientation (R) Orientation to the Battle of Stones River (R) Visitor Center Operations Orientation (R) Introduction to the National Park Service: The History of the NPS (R) Foundations of Interpretation (R) Effective Informal Interpretation (R) First Aid and CPR (O) Housing may be provided to volunteers who commit to work at least 32 hours per week for minimum of four weeks.
