About this Opportunity
The Virginia Creeper Trail Bike Patrol team typically covers 17 miles of the Virginia Creeper Trail, a once former railroad bed stretching from Abingdon, VA to the North Carolina state line. This trail receives an estimated amount of about 200,000 visitors per year. Bike Patrol are highly skilled bicyclists that focus on repairing visitor bikes if something goes wrong on the trail, provides assistance to 911 emergency needs, answers questions from the public, coordinates urgent transportation when needed, educates visitors about Leave No Trace and low impact land ethics, pick up trash, install trail signs, and maintain counts of visitor use. Bike Patrol Volunteers may work alone most of the time. Possible volunteer housing available.
The volunteer position of Virginia Creeper Trail Patrol is in place primarily to provide information and assistance to National Forest visitors, and secondarily to perform trail maintenance, first aid, and bike repairs. Therefore, it is imperative that this volunteer work on days when the most visitors are present – weekends and holidays.
The Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail is one of Virginia's finest rail-trails. The Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail occupies the bed of what was once a rugged mountain railroad between Abingdon and the Virginia-North Carolina border about a mile east of Whitetop Community. At the trail's lowest point, where it crosses South Holston Lake on a huge curving trestle, it is 2,000 feet above sea level, but, by the time it reaches Whitetop Community, it has ascended 1,600 feet, some of it at nearly 7 percent grade!
