About this Opportunity
Join the wonderful group of volunteers who staff the Visitor Center at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
The Visitor Center (VC) consists of exhibits and displays related to the area, as well as a bookstore run by the SF Bay Wildlife Society (VC Volunteers handle bookstore sales). It is open 10a-5p, Tuesday through Sunday. Volunteers work in shifts, either 10a-1:30p (opening) or 1:30p-5p (closing).
VC volunteers are the first point of contact for refuge visitors. Volunteers answer questions about everything from hiking/biking trails to the natural history of the area to the salt pond restoration project to the inevitable "Where are the bathrooms?" and "Where are the animals?" questions.
VC Volunteers must be responsible, friendly, and enjoy working with a variety of visitors; knowledge of salt pond and salt marsh habitats, birds, and register sales are helpful but not necessary. Training about the Refuge and VC procedures will be provided. Volunteering on a regular basis is preferable, but not necessary. The VC is usually staffed during the week by a great group of regular volunteers. However, volunteers are needed for spot-fill-in and weekend VC coverage.
