About this Opportunity

Join Habitat for Humanity as a Family Selection Committee Member!

The Family Selection Committee determines eligibility for potential Habitat homeowners, or "partner family members." You will be a part of an important life-changing experience for families, helping them achieve homeownership for the first time.

Responsibilities:

  • Review applications to the home buyer program to see if the applicant meets the basic eligibility requirements.
  • Conduct home visits with potential homeowners
  • Make recommendations to the Board of Directors on what applications should be approved for the home buyer program.
  • Review and recommend changes to the eligibility requirements and application process.

Member qualifications:

  • Be a good listener.
  • Be sensitive to issues that may result from living with a limited income.
  • Understand the Habitat mission and have the desire to promote it.
  • Understand the struggles of low-income families and the challenges they face.
  • Ability to ensure the confidentiality of families.
  • Ability to analyze an application and verifications to determine if the applicant meets eligibility requirements and is ready to be successful at home ownership.
  • Experience with finance and/or, home ownership, real estate, law, social services, human resources, non-profits and languages a plus, but not required

Time Commitment: Family Selection Committee meets about 4 times per year, with meetings lasting about 1 hour each (evenings). In addition to meetings, the Family Selection committee completes home visits on potential family partners. Each home visit should last about an hour and most committee members complete 3-6 home visits each year. Home visits are flexible and normally done evenings or weekends, depending on family availability.

Training: Training for this position is hands-on, provided by staff and other committee members.
