About A Free Bird

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City, operating fully remote. We empower children ages 4โ€“18 who are battling or surviving cancer by giving them the opportunity to explore their creative passions. Whether itโ€™s music, painting, acting, or writing, we believe artistic expression is vital to healing and personal growth.

About the Role

As an HR Recruiter (Volunteer), youโ€™ll be the first point of contact for bringing new talent into the organization. You'll help recruit passionate volunteers and interns to power our mission. Reporting to the HR Director, you will assist with recruitment, orientation, and onboarding efforts โ€” making sure every candidate has a smooth and professional introduction to A Free Bird.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone pursuing a career in human resources or looking to gain direct experience in a nonprofit environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Screen applications and conduct interviews with potential volunteers and interns
  • Schedule, host, and participate in virtual onboarding sessions and orientation
  • Manage and maintain Google Calendar invites and internal interview schedules
  • Support candidate communication via email and Slack, and provide timely updates
  • Draft job postings, maintain role documentation, and update volunteer files
  • Collaborate with the HR team to build efficient systems and improve the candidate experience
  • Create and maintain organized documentation in Google Drive and Microsoft Office
  • Maintain alignment with the mission and values of A Free Bird in all communication and activities

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • At least 1 year of experience in recruiting, interviewing, or administrative HR support (internships count!)
  • Strong communication and people skills โ€” youโ€™re confident speaking with new candidates and representing the organization
  • Highly organized and comfortable managing calendars, files, and onboarding tasks
  • Proficient in Google Workspace (Docs, Drive, Calendar) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Motivated, adaptable, and able to work independently in a remote setting
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Human Resources, Business, Communications, or related field is a plus

Additional Details

  • This is a remote, volunteer position requiring a minimum 3-month commitment
  • Weekly time commitment is 5โ€“10 hours, with flexibility around your schedule
  • Reliable internet, a computer, and availability for at least two video meetings per week is required
