Volunteer Position Purpose:

Volunteers will assist with day-to-day operations of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond (RMHC Richmond) Family Room Program and Hospitality Cart Program at HCA Johnston-Willis Hospital.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Engage with patients and families by providing hospitality, access to food, activities, and other RMHC Richmond offsite programming or support services.

  • Family Room: Greet families and grant them access to the Family Room.Monitor and maintain the space (restocking snacks and coffee and performing light housekeeping). Track numberof families utilizing the space.

  • Hospitality Cart:Distribute items to families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Mother Infant Unit (MIU). Track number of families utilizing the service,

  • Collaborate with RMHC Richmond staff to receive deliveries and ensure adequate stock of supplies.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must be friendly, outgoing, and kind with an excellent understanding of and ability to follow professional and personal boundaries.

  • Comfortable volunteering in a medically intensive pediatric service area.

  • Effective communication skills, ability to communicate with adults and children. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Prior experience with children, personally or professionally, preferred.

  • Must be willing to represent Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond while serving onsite at Medical Hospital Facility/Center.

Time Commitment:

Volunteers must be able to commit long term (at least 6 months). Each volunteer must attend at least two shifts per month. Shifts are flexible based on availability and typically take an hour and a half to two hours.

Other Information:

  • Volunteers are required to complete onboarding/training with RMHC Richmond and HCA Johnston-Willis Hospital.

  • Volunteers must successfully complete a Criminal Background Check and T-Spot Test (Tuberculosis Screening).

  • Face masks covering the mouth and nose are required in specific parts of the hospital.

  • Beginning in November, volunteers must have proof of Flu Vaccination on file with HCA Johnston-Willis Volunteer Services.

  • Must be comfortable standing or walking for long periods of time. Ability to lift/carry items that are at least 25 pounds.
