About A Free Bird
A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in New York City. We empower children diagnosed with cancer by helping them explore and express themselves through the arts. Artistic expression plays a powerful role in healing, and our mission is to support these young artists as they discover their creative voice through mediums such as visual art, music, writing, performance, and design.
Position Overview
We’re seeking a creative and detail-oriented Graphic Designer (Volunteer) to join our Multimedia Department. In this role, you’ll contribute to the visual identity of A Free Bird across platforms — creating dynamic, mission-aligned digital assets that support internal teams, public campaigns, and programming. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to grow their design portfolio while making a meaningful impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Design visually engaging digital assets for use across web, social media, presentations, toolkits, and print
- Collaborate with internal departments to develop branded graphics that support marketing, fundraising, and educational efforts
- Support long-term creative projects including annual reports, event materials, and program visuals
- Ensure visual consistency with A Free Bird’s brand identity across all materials
- Participate in team meetings and incorporate feedback from project stakeholders
- Help manage internal asset libraries and organize design files for reuse
Qualifications
- 1–2 years of experience in graphic design (freelance, internship, or agency work welcome)
- Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
- Ability to develop original concepts and turn creative briefs into final products
- Understanding of layout, typography, branding, and color theory
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Interest in nonprofit work and purpose-driven storytelling
- Familiarity with Canva, Sketch, or Figma is a plus
- Basic proficiency with Google Drive, and Microsoft Office tools
Preferred Skills (Not Required)
- Experience creating print-ready files or promotional graphics
- Familiarity with creating simple motion graphics or animated visuals
- Comfort collaborating with UX/UI or video editors on cross-functional projects
