OpenGov Africa is a civic-tech STEM startup using open source technology, data, and community-driven innovation to reimagine governance, strengthen transparency, and empower citizen participation across Africa. We work with citizens, policymakers, researchers, and technologists to foster open governance models that empower communities, reduce corruption, and create equitable development opportunities.

As a new grassroots startup, OpenGov Africa is forming a Protest Monitoring & Safety Team to support civic action and ensure that democratic rights are upheld during citizen-led protests and demonstrations. This team will play a critical role in documenting events, monitoring safety conditions, and reporting incidents in real-time to strengthen transparency, protect citizens, and promote accountability.

This role is ideal for individuals passionate about human rights, civic freedoms, digital security, and citizen safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring & Documentation: Track and record protests and civic demonstrations through digital tools, social media, and direct reports.
  • Safety Support: Provide safety resources and guidelines to protesters, including information on legal rights and emergency contacts.
  • Incident Reporting: Document incidents of abuse, violations, or risks to civic freedoms, and provide reports to advocacy and legal teams.
  • Digital Security: Help train and support activists in secure communication and data protection practices.
  • Collaboration: Work with advocacy, legal, and data teams to feed into broader campaigns and transparency reports.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest or experience in human rights, civic activism, or social justice.
  • Excellent observational, writing, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to stay objective, detail-oriented, and calm under pressure.
  • Knowledge of digital safety tools and secure communication is a plus.
  • Prior grassroots, legal, or journalism experience preferred (but not required).

Expected Requirements

  • Time Commitment: 4-6 hours per week (remote with some field monitoring optional, depending on location).
  • Commitment Period: Minimum 3 months preferred.
  • Remote Work: Must have reliable internet access.
