About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, literacy development, and creative expression, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

MAP Connect, our online program, extends this mission into the digital space—removing barriers of geography and mobility by providing access to mentorship and learning opportunities virtually. It is a cornerstone of our effort to bridge inequities in education while ensuring that every student, regardless of circumstance, has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed.

Role Overview

We are seeking a dedicated leader to serve as Deputy Director of MAP Connect. This role will work closely with the Program Director and executive team to strengthen and expand MAP’s online program. The Deputy Director will oversee daily operations, coordinate volunteers and mentors, and help shape innovative approaches to virtual education.

This position is ideal for a professional who is both strategic and hands-on—someone who can manage with structure while leading with compassion. The Deputy Director will play a critical role in scaling a program that provides essential academic and social-emotional support to students living in shelters and facing housing instability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Program Director to refine and implement strategic goals for MAP Connect
  • Manage day-to-day operations, ensuring program schedules and activities are delivered consistently and with quality
  • Recruit, mentor, and supervise volunteers and mentors, fostering a culture of inclusion and accountability
  • Develop systems to track student progress and measure program outcomes
  • Build strong relationships with families, schools, and community partners
  • Support program innovation by introducing effective online learning practices
  • Represent MAP Connect at external meetings, events, and collaborations
  • Provide timely reports and updates to the Program Director and executive leadership
  • Check and respond to emails daily; ensure all responses are provided within 48 hours
  • Take responsibility for performance improvement, including identifying challenges and implementing solutions for program and team growth

Qualifications

  • Background in education, nonprofit leadership, social services, or related field
  • Demonstrated success in program management or organizational leadership, preferably with virtual or hybrid learning
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to inspire and support diverse teams
  • Familiarity with youth development, literacy, or mentoring programs is highly valuable
  • Excellent communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and adaptability across diverse communities
  • Proficiency with online learning platforms and collaboration tools
  • Deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and expanding opportunities for underserved youth

Commitment

  • Volunteer leadership role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week
  • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
  • Remote-first, with optional opportunities for in-person engagement in New York City

What You Will Gain

  • Leadership experience in a mission-driven nonprofit organization
  • The opportunity to design, expand, and evaluate a pioneering online learning model
  • Collaboration with a passionate, committed team of mentors and educators
  • Professional growth through mentorship, references, and leadership development
  • The chance to make a measurable impact in the lives of students experiencing housing instability
