Bring Joy to the Life I did Not Choose

You can bring joy to a person living a life they did not choose. A brief visit to read the newspaper, a magazine, the facility menu or activities list. Any of these small acts of kindness will be appreciated for this resident who is legally blind and cannot read after his long career as an engineer. This resident would like to get out of his room to the common areas or when the weather is nice outdoors for a little sunshine. A brief visit every other week would go a very long way to reduce his social isolation.

Requirements to be a great volunteer include:

• a desire to help others;
• a pleasant demeanor;
• a good reading/speaking voice;
• average reading skills;
• organizational or planning abilities;
• a good driving record;
• a clear criminal history;
• two references
• access to your own transportation. You must be in USA, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts or Rhode Island.
