About this Opportunity
Children of refugee families face many challenges when adjusting to their new life in the U.S. From acclimating to a new school to learning a new language, they are undergoing a very exciting, but also overwhelming, time. By providing tutoring, you can help refugee youth better understand their curriculum, advance their English skills, and receive much-needed encouragement in their education. Perhaps most valuable of all, we hope that
as a volunteer you can build a meaningful friendship with the child and their family.
Responsibilities:
* Provide 1:1 tutoring to a refugee student in Grades K-12 (ages 5-18). Training is provided by HIAS staff.
* Assist the student by providing homework assistance, ESL support, and encouragement.
Location and Time Commitment:
* Volunteers are asked to commit to tutoring for 6 months, one day per week for 1-2 hours based on the
family and volunteer’s agreement.
* For ease of transportation, volunteers are asked to travel to the family’s home or a nearby location for
weekly tutoring sessions. Most families live in and around the Rogers Park neighborhood.
* Tutoring may take place on weekdays after-school or on weekends, depending on schedules and
availability.
Requirements:
* Must be 18 years old OR accompanied by an adult
* Enjoys working with children and teens
* Enthusiastic and encouraging towards students
* Comfortable tutoring a variety of subjects at different grade levels
* Respectful of cultural difference and willingness to learn from diverse populations
