About this Opportunity
Purpose and description: Refugees face many challenges when adjusting to their new life
in the U.S. From finding housing and employment, to becoming familiar with a new culture.
Both our Refugee Resettlement and Uniting for Ukraine participants are undergoing a very
exciting, but also overwhelming time in their lives. However, it all begins with learning the
English language and being able to communicate with others in their community. By
providing ESL tutoring support, you will be helping refugees gain the language skills to
flourish in their new home and community. Perhaps most valuable of all, we hope that the
volunteers in our program will build a meaningful connection with our refugee families that
will promote their emotional and social wellbeing in the U.S.

by HIAS staff.
* Engage participants in conversations that will increase their familiarity with day-to?day interactions.
Location and Time Commitment:
* Volunteers are asked to commit to tutoring once per week for up to 6 months with
each tutoring session being 1-2 hours based on the participant and volunteer’s
agreement.
* Volunteers and participants are expected to come up with a time and location to
meet that will work best for the both of them-whether that be in person or virtual-
to complete weekly tutoring sessions.
* Tutoring may take place on weekdays or on weekends, depending on schedules and
availability. Tutoring is year-round.
