About this Opportunity
During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands-on care and education to disaster-affected clients. The work setting is generally in emergency shelters or on outreach teams in the community. (Keep in mind, you could be assigned to another work location once you arrive on scene depending on the needs of the operation.)
Below are the basic requirements for a new volunteer to become a Red Cross Disaster Health Services
responder. If you meet the requirements, please consider volunteering with the Red Cross!!
Basic Eligibility Criteria:
Current, active, and unencumbered licensure or certification for the following healthcare professionals:
* Registered Nurse
* Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse
* Nurse Practitioner
* Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
* Certified Nursing Assistant
* Medical Doctor
* Doctor of Osteopathy
* Emergency Medical Technician
* Paramedic
* Physician Assistant
Retired licenses can be recognized as active and unencumbered if the state issuing the license does
not curtail the scope of practice of the individual.
Only Registered Nurses have full scope of practice as a Red Cross volunteers. Prescriptive authority as
held by physicians and advanced practice nurses cannot be utilized when acting as a Red Cross
volunteer.
CNAs may participate in local shelter settings under the direct supervision of an RN.
Healthcare students may participate in a local shelter setting, during preparedness or readiness
activities under direct RN supervision.
