Community Health Worker - Student Position - Volunteer Opportunity:

Role Overview

This role is the perfect fit for a motivated student looking to gain practical experience, explore the Community Health Worker (CHW) field, and ultimately become certified. You will be a hands-on contributor, directly supporting HHP’s mission to improve health literacy and empower underserved communities.

This is an entirely volunteer, remote-only position with flexible hours, giving preference to U.S.-based candidates.

Role Balance: This role is 100% Direct Service/Patient Advocacy Focus.

Duties (Reporting to the Patient Advocate Lead)

  • Serve as a liaison between health and social services and the community to facilitate access and improve health outcomes.
  • Conduct outreach, informal counseling, social support, and patient advocacy activities.
  • Increase health knowledge and self-sufficiency through culturally appropriate education.
  • Complete tasks assigned by the Patient Advocate Lead to support the overall CHW program.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Proof of current enrollment in an educational program (vocational, community college, or bachelor’s programs accepted).
  • Over the age of 18.
  • Strong communications skills.

Preferred:

  • Worked experience in community health or healthcare (including internships).
  • CHW Certification or commitment to complete training within 6 months of onboarding.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in other languages (Spanish, Mandarin, etc.).

Skills

  • Willingness to learn how to use health data and referral systems (Pear Suite, Unite Us).
  • Maintains knowledge of transportation and other barriers to care encountered by individuals.
  • Possesses a foundational knowledge of community health concepts, advocacy, and health literacy.

Conditions of Volunteer Acceptance

  • Commitment: We ask for a commitment of ~3 hours per week for at least six months to ensure a meaningful learning experience. Flexibility is available to accommodate study schedules.
  • Must track hours/tasks using HHP's required tools (Clockify/Trello).
