About this Opportunity

“Have you ever watched a fire truck pass by with lights and sirens, and thought about where it might be responding?”

If your answer is YES, then maybe it is time you learn more.

You might have an interest, in becoming a Scott Volunteer Firefighter.

The Scott Volunteer Fire Department is currently, accepting applications for Volunteer Firefighters. Becoming a volunteer firefighter is a great way to give back to the community and gain a unique lifetime experience like no other.

To give a quick overview, the SFD is ultimately two Fire Departments, operating under one roof, contracting fire services to the City of Scott, and the Unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish. There are dedicated SFD equipment and resources for each.    The SFD is heavily supplemented and relies on Volunteer Firefighters.

Still in North America even today, well over 60% of Fire Department staffing is compromised of Volunteer Firefighters.

The amount of volunteer firefighters is decreasing, as call volumes and the need for fire services increase.

Becoming a Scott Volunteer Firefighter isn’t just running into burning buildings, Scott Firefighters have multiple responsibilities beyond responding to structure, vehicle and all other types of fires. The SFD also responds to medical emergencies, water rescues, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle crashes with injuries, all incidents requiring the response of the Fire Department. Scott Volunteer Firefighters, also participate heavily in special events and fire prevention education details in the community.

In 2020 the SVFD responded to over 1000 calls for service.

Although previous firefighting experience is preferred, there is no pre-required training to become a Scott Volunteer Firefighter.

As a Scott Volunteer Firefighter, you will work hands-on, side by side with trained and certified Firefighters, receiving training, and learning the basics to assist and complete the required job task.

In the near future, you will be eligible, after completing all the required and prerequisite training to become certified as Firefighter 1 and a Louisiana certified Emergency Medical Responder.

Although there is a minimum amount of training hours and emergency calls to make monthly. Life as a Scott Volunteer Firefighter is not as time-consuming as most think. The volunteers of the SFD participate in weekly training and respond to emergencies at their availability or work volunteer shifts at the fire station. Scott volunteers and families go about enjoying their daily lives and activities.

It is neighbors helping neighbors, and even if you are not from the immediate Scott area the self-gratification of helping someone in need is priceless.

We thank you for your interest and hope you continue the application process in becoming a Scott Volunteer Firefighter.
