About this Opportunity
A Matter of Balance Program (Falls PreventionWorkshop) Seeks Volunteer Teachers
Falls are not a normal part of aging, but they are one of the greatest causes of stress and serious injury among people aged 65 and older. In fact, everyelevensecondsan older adult is treated in the emergency room after experiencing a fall. The good news is that most falls can be prevented, and you have the power to help our older neighbors reduce their risk! Make a difference by volunteering as A Matter of Balance workshop teacher!
SMAA has been offering A Matter of Balance in the community for many years. This evidence-based workshop offers a comprehensive lookat falls prevention, including an engaging blend of gentle seated/standing exercises andgroup discussions on: home safety, how to get up from a fall, self-advocacy and more. Its very social with opportunities to learn from other participants as well as the volunteer teachers. Workshops run in 2-hour blocks, 2x/week for 4 weeks (there is also an option for 1x/week for 8 weeks).
SMAA offersA Matter of Balance regularly, at various locations in southern Maine, as well asvirtual classes...and we are looking for volunteer teachers to lead/facilitate the workshops.
If you are enthusiastic about making a difference with older adults, enjoy leading meaningful group discussions and activities, please consider training to be a Matter of Balance volunteer teacher.
Assignment:Volunteers can begin after completing orientation, A Matter of Balance teacher training (we'll teach you everything you need to know to lead the program!), and a necessary criminal background check.
