Breach the Surface: Expanding Access to Ocean Education
Organization Details
About
The general public’s knowledge about ocean-related issues is alarmingly low both nationally and internationally. A 2018 study, "Development of the International Ocean Literacy Survey," found that the American public is more literate about video games and gambling than our world’s oceans. Oceans provide vital ecosystem services, yet many schools lack the resources to teach these issues, leaving students and adults alike without the knowledge to drive future ocean conservation.
Breach's programs seek to fill this gap by engaging youth, educational institutions, and the general public in digital ocean education. Programs like our digital podcast, Shellphone , allow us to highlight content from ocean educators, enhance in-school curricula, and connect with broad audiences. This month, Breach will be piloting our latest educational program Ocean Class , within the Hillsborough County and greater Tampa Bay school system.
We’re excited for the opportunity to work with you all and Breach the Surface within the Tampa Bay community. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].
